Consider the height of your server cabinet
'u' is a standard measurement for all rackmount tools. One rack 'u' is equal to 44.45mm high. 24 port patch panel or switch usually come in 1u in size.
Then you should work out the equipment you want to put inside the server rack. When you know the size of server cabinet you are going to use, allow 10% extra room for any possible expansion in the future.
Since the measurement of 'u' is made for internal space only, you need to make sure that the cabinet fits your office space.
Choose the width of your server cabinet
Server racks are commonly come in 600mm wide and 800mm wide configuration. The significant distinctiveness between a 600mm wide and 800mm wide is capacity for cable management.
If you plan to put patching work in server cabinet, it is recommended to use 800mm wide rack as it offers wider space for cable management.

Determine the depth of your server cabinet

Food for thought: it is recommended to have ventilation of server rack to prevent overheat and malfunction of your equipment. Particularly, if you are going to install many servers in your cabinet, having optional fan unit would be really beneficial in preventing your server from overheat.
